The Fullerton Joint Union High School District graduation requirements are designed to:

1. Ensure proficiency in basic skills.
2. Provide a common base of general education.
3. Encourage academic excellence and participation in enrichment studies.
4. Comply with the codes of the State of California.

A single diploma is granted by the Fullerton Joint Union High School District. Academic and general education study programs are defined in order to challenge the student and recognize superior achievement. Seals are affixed to the diploma to indicate a 3.0 to 3.49 grade point average, or a 3.5 or above grade point average. The minimum graduation requirements are listed under "General Requirements for Graduation" and "Specific Requirements - General Education Studies."

1. The student shall attend eight semesters, grades nine through twelve.

2. The student shall enroll in and satisfactorily attend a minimum of five classes in each of the final two semesters.

3. The student shall satisfactorily complete a minimum of 40 units in the final two semesters.

4. The student shall achieve satisfactory scores on the District competency examinations in reading, editing, writing, mathematics, and computers.

5. In addition, beginning with the Class of 2004 the student will have to pass the state high school exit examination.

1. Units
   The student shall satisfactorily complete a minimum of 220 units.

2. English
   The student shall satisfactorily complete a minimum of 40 units of English. The sequence of courses shall be English 1, 2, 3, and 4 or two additional semesters of English electives. A maximum of 20 units of ELD 2 or above course work may be applied toward meeting the FJUHSD English graduation requirement.

3. Social Science
   The student shall satisfactorily complete a minimum of 30 units of social science. The sequence of courses is 10 units of world history; 10 units of United States history, eleventh grade; and 5 units of American government and 5 units of economics, twelfth grade.

4. Science
   The student shall satisfactorily complete a minimum of 20 units of science including 10 units of life science and 10 units of physical science.

5. Mathematics
   The student shall satisfactorily complete a minimum of 20 units of mathematics. Courses shall be taken in the ninth and twelfth grades unless the student has successfully completed 20 units of mathematics prior to the twelfth grade and has passed the mathematics competency requirement. A student who does not pass the competency requirement shall be required to update math skills through a summer school program or an additional math class prior to taking a special math competency examination. In summary, to meet the mathematics graduation requirement a student shall take and satisfactorily complete not less than 20 units of mathematics and shall satisfy the mathematics competency requirement. Beginning with the Class of 2004, the student will have to pass Algebra 1.

6. Visual/Performing Arts/Foreign Language
   The student shall satisfactorily complete a minimum of 10 units in either visual/performing arts (art, drama, music, and floriculture) or foreign language.

7. Health Education
   The student shall satisfactorily complete 5 units of health education.

8. Oral Communication
   The student shall satisfactorily complete 2-1/2 units of oral communication.

9. Driver Education
   The student shall satisfactorily complete 2-1/2 units of driver education.

10. Physical Education
    The student shall satisfactorily complete a minimum of 20 units of physical education. The sequence of enrollment is grades nine and ten. The student will be enrolled in physical education until this requirement is met.

Recognition of "Honors - General Education Studies" at graduation shall be awarded to the student who earns a 3.0 to 3.49 grade point average. Recognition of "High Honors - General Education Studies" shall be awarded to the student who earns a 3.5 or above grade point average.

1. Units
   The student shall satisfactorily complete a minimum of 230 units.

2. English
   The student shall satisfactorily complete a minimum of 40 units of English. The sequence of courses shall be English 1, 2, 3, and 4 or two semesters college preparatory English electives. A maximum of 20 units of ELD 2 or above course work may be applied toward meeting the FJUHSD English graduation requirement.

3. Social Science
   The student shall satisfactorily complete a minimum of 30 units of social science: The sequence of courses shall be 10 units of world history; 10 units of United States history, eleventh grade; and 5 units of American government and 5 units of economics, twelfth grade.

4. Science
   The student shall satisfactorily complete a minimum of 20 units of college preparatory laboratory science including 10 units of a life science and 10 units of a physical science.

5. Mathematics
   The student shall satisfactorily complete a minimum of 30 units of mathematics. The sequence of courses shall be Integrated Algebra 1, Integrated Geometry, and Integrated Algebra 2 (or their equivalent). Integrated Algebra I satisfactorily completed in junior high may exempt a student from 10 units of the mathematics requirement. However, the 230-unit requirement shall remain unchanged. A student who does not pass the competency requirement shall be required to update math skills through a summer school program, an additional math class, or some type of added tutorial assistance prior to taking a special math examination.

6. Health Education
   The student shall satisfactorily complete 5 units of health education.

7. Oral Communication
   The student shall satisfactorily complete 2-1/2 units of oral communication.

8. Driver Education
   The student shall satisfactorily complete 2-1/2 units of driver education.

9. Physical Education
   The student shall satisfactorily complete a minimum of 20 units of physical education. The sequence of enrollment is grades nine and ten. The student will be enrolled in physical education until the requirement is met.

10. Foreign Language
    The student shall satisfactorily complete a minimum of 20 units of the same foreign language. The first year of a language satisfactorily completed in junior high may exempt a student from 10 units of the language requirement. However, the 230-unit requirement shall remain unchanged.

11. Visual/Performing Arts-Applied Arts*
    The student shall satisfactorily complete a minimum of 10 units in visual/performing arts (art, drama, and music) or applied arts (agriculture, computer science, business, home economics, and industrial/technical education).

    *An applied arts course does not satisfy the CSU or UC visual/performing arts entry requirement.

12. Advanced Courses
    The student shall satisfactorily complete 20 units chosen from honors or non-honors advanced level math, science, English, social science, foreign language, or visual/performing arts.

Recognition of "Honors - Academic Studies" at graduation shall be awarded to the student who completes the academic studies program and earns a 3.0 to 3.49 grade point average. Recognition of "High Honors - Academic Studies" shall be awarded to the student who earns a 3.5 or above grade point average.

The student who wishes to deviate in any way from the established general or academic graduation requirements shall submit for prior approval a petition stating an alternate plan. This petition must be reviewed by the parent(s) and the counselor. Their recommendations shall be submitted to the principal for final approval. Satisfactory scores on the competency examinations are not subject to variance except as provided in an Individualized Education Program (IEP) developed for an individual with exceptional needs.
