ADMINISTRATION
Please read the following information carefully (with your student if possible) and refer to it during the school year.
  1. Parents are required to verify a student's reason for absence in one of two ways:
    1. By Phone. (562) 266-5012 or 266-5013. On return to school, the student may report directly to class.
    2. By Signed Note. The student, upon his/her return to school, should bring the note to the Attendance Office.
Either excuse will require the student and parent's names, exact date(s) of absence, and the reason. ALL ABSENCES MUST BE CLEARED WITHIN THREE (3) DAYS. Excuses after three days cannot be accepted and uncleared absences become truancies on a student's record. Parents going out of town should notify the school of the name of the adult left in charge for absence clearing.
  2. All students are expected to attend all scheduled classes on time. Attendance and tardies are reported and recorded for each period daily. California State Law requires all persons under 18 years of age to attend school regularly until graduation. The only absences approved by the state are those for illness of the students, medical or dental appointments, religious holidays, or death in the immediate family.
  3. TRUANCIES OR UNEXCUSED ABSENCES AFFECT UNITS OF CREDIT. FOR EACH THREE UNEXCUSED ABSENCES FROM A CLASS WITHIN A SEMESTER, A STUDENT MAY FAIL TO EARN ONE (1) UNIT OF CLASS CREDIT. Students who earn partial credit in a required course will have to make up the work in Continuing Education or repeat the course.
  4. It is the legal responsibility of the parents to insure that the student attends classes. The school will make a reasonable effort to notify parents of absences from school or class. A computerized letter is mailed to parents upon the second, fourth, and seventh unexcused absence in each class. Phone calls using an automated dialer are made to home phone numbers of absent students on the afternoon, evening, or following morning of an absence. Progress reports will be sent to students who are in danger of earning less than the normal number of units. Teachers or administrators may assign detention or Saturday School for cuts. Also, parents are invited to monitor their student's attendance. Please phone (562) 266-5012 on any day you wish to check on your student's attendance.
  5. Students with approved absences are entitled to make up work. For completion of the make-up work, a student has as many school days as he/she was absent unless other arrangements are made with the teacher. It is the student's responsibility to ask the teacher about make-up work. In some instances, the letter grade of an approved absent student may be adversely affected due to the impossibility of re-creating classroom experiences (for example: a review of a test), although credit will be earned.
  6. Students may not leave campus without checking out with the Attendance Office. If a student becomes ill during the school day, he/she must report to the Attendance office where parents will be contacted. IF A STUDENT LEAVES CAMPUS WITHOUT PRIOR APPROVAL, THE ABSENCE WILL RESULT IN AN UNEXCUSED ABSENCE AND MAY NOT BE CLEARED.
  7. Unapproved absences, which will result in unexcused absences, include failure to attend class without parental knowledge and written/phone approval, and failure to attend classes before a change of schedule has been made.
  8. There are no excused tardies--students either are on time or are late.
  9. Students may have (3) tardies per class per semester.
  10. Tardy students must re-admit from the office prior to entering the class to which they are late.
  11. Excessive tardies are considered defiant behavior and may result in the student being dropped from the class with a grade of "F."
  12. Intermediate notification and/or disciplinary steps will be taken with students who are frequently tardy.
  13. Tardies to class interfere with class procedures and student progress, and must be avoided. Detentions will be assigned by teachers upon tardies. Tardies of more than 10 minutes will become unexcused absences.
  14. Students may not take part in afternoon and/or evening school functions on any school day as participants unless they have been in attendance on that day for at least a minimum of 240 Minutes. School activity transfers (field trips) will count as school attendance.
  15. While 18 year-olds legally may write their own notes, it is recommended that parents retain that prerogative. If excused absences with a student signature are deemed excessive, a doctor's note for an excuse may be required. PARENTS OF AN 18 YEAR-OLD STUDENT MUST NOTIFY THE ATTENDANCE OFFICE IN WRITING IF RE/SHE IS ALLOWED TO CLEAR HIS/HER OWN ABSENCES.
